NYS DOE Seeks Waivers, Looks to Forego Regents Exams

BREAKING NEWS: The New York State Department of Education is seeking federal waivers for “State Assessments and Accountability Requirements.”

The State Education Commissioner Betty A. Rosa announced today that New York State will be seeking waivers from the U.S. Department of Education to omit students from having to take state regents exams.

“In light of the ongoing pandemic, we have determined that the Spring 2021 state assessments cannot be safely, equitably and fairly administered to students in schools across the state and, therefore, are seeking these waivers,” said Board of Regents Chancellor Lester Young Jr.

Commissioner Rosa commented saying, “Given the varying circumstance in each school district, the only fair and appropriate decision at this time is to seek waivers to forego testing and accountability requirements for the 2020-21 school year.”

So what does this mean for students? Well, if the waivers are approved by the U.S. Department of Education, it would mean that all students would not be required to take regents exams in the spring. Students would receive credits for their classes without a state exam, however teachers could administer a local exam if the district allows.

This is a developing story and we will continue to update it as we learn more.
